If you're having problems with PunkBuster kicking you from the server, try manually updating your PB files. The easiest way is to run the autoupdater, found here:

PB can suck a dick. Now im getting the infamous "PB init failure" I have attempted the Manual updating, running pbsetup, deleting my pb directory and running setup with no resolve. I guess its time to stop playing for the night  Is it possible the server side files have not updated?

Version 1.625 of the PB Server for COD4 has been released to our PB Master Servers for auto-update and to our website download page. This update reverts to PB Client version 2.009 due to recent PB Client builds not auto-updating smoothly. A new PB Client build will be released soon to correct this issue. Kicking has been temporarily disabled at our masters so as not to negatively affect players who do not have PB Client version 2.009.

Wait... Punkbuster hasn't died a horrible horrible death yet??? WTF...

I remember fighting with PB ages ago with Q3... a lot of servers required it...  Fuck that noise, if COD4 requires it, I ain't buying it.

I was in a server for 2 minutes, got my first kill on my first try and Pb kicks me. I thought they thought I was hacking already so they kicked me. Haha. Woot this update saved me from going crazy.

um it will let me do campaign but not multiplayer. when i start the multiplayer it comes up as "punkbuster intilized" and just doesnt let me join any servers

Right click on "For Players"
Click "Save as"
Find the folder called "pbsec_files" on your computer, and save it there (By default, it is in C:\Program Files\Activision\pbsec_files)

Oh, wait, that doesn't sound like a punkbuster problem. I'm pretty sure that's what happens if you don't have a microphone plugged in. Try plugging anything (even a pair of headphones) in there, and it should work.
