so I guess its ok for hispanics to march out of school work, etc.  to protest their support of immigration, but one 13-year-old white girl brings a sign to school and gets targeted for it.  from the source-
"Melanie Bowers, 13, brought the sign to Athens Middle School on Friday as part of a class project on political activism. Each child was assigned to pick an issue and prepare a poster supporting a position."

so basically she got beaten up a bit for doing a school project.  appearently the sign said "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration."  I would say this wasnt a good idea the teacher had to have students do this, but one thing that grinds me these days.  If you are opposed to illegal immigration, your a racist.  If your not opposed, your lumped in with the aliens.  I for one am all for steep punishment for illegal immigration.  I hate the fact that people flood this country constantly.  I dont care how bad it is where they are, you are dealt what you are.  Those of us that live here face huge problems all that time and most of us deal with it.  This is no longer a racial issue, its a census issue.  too many people here wasting water, energy, etc.  I think I might move to prince edward island.  I think there are a few hundred thousand scottish, dutch and canadian people live there.  By the way, dont get the wrong idea about what Im saying.  This is my opinion about immigration, not the peoples race who are doing it.

Well, it sucks she got beat down.....but I'm sure those kids all got reprimand.

Deadman in todays society if your white your a racist if you talk about anything regarding race.  If your any other race but white you can say/do whatever you want when it comes to race w/out it being considered racist.  Secondly some minorities seem to think that because your white you are responsible for the racism they face.

Personally I give a big "fuck you" to racists everywhere no matter what you look like or where your from you still bleed red.

As for immigration I am against illegal immigration into any country, especially if you take advantage of the country w/out paying taxes and ect.  However, I am all about controlled immigration.....I bet my ancestors would have died w/out it.

Lastly, I'm getting pretty sick of the way things are here.  Sure we have an awesome quality of life.....but I hate our society.  So I hear you on leaving the country...Me and Fluffy have been plotting our escape for years.

This is dumb.  Period.  End of story.  Just take a look at this statement:

"It's disappointing that it happened," Athens school district superintendent Fred Hayes said. "It does not surprise me with the political nature of this issue."

NO SHIT!  Since they were doing a project on political activism, every students issue was going to have a political nature.  That was the point!

Of course, the whole article is full of bullshit.  It's not appropriate for 8th graders?  Why the hell not?  We had a mock political debate about all kinds of issues (it was a mock presidential debate with the participants acting as the candidates) when I was in 8th grade and nothing like this ever happened.

At one point she had 20 students around her, 3 were suspended, the sign was destroyed, and they're investigating to see if anyone else was involved?  WTH?!  Of course there were others involved!  If it were me, I'd just suspend every student that was in the area.  If you have to, offer a reward to students that come forward to report who was there.

Instead of teaching his 8th grader that she shouldn't discuss illegal immigration because it's "too hot", teach her to stand up for what she believes.  I know he's just trying to protect his daughter, but if you stop speaking your mind, it only gives the other party more power.

I'm sure they'll get those cameras fixed real soon.

The three students that were suspended were hispanic.  The question to ask of the school administration is, did any of those three students leave school to go protest last year and if so, were any of them suspended?

In any case, it could easily be considered reverse racism.  She was white.  She made a sign that essentially protested illegal immigration.  She was beaten up by a bunch of students, three of which were hispanic.

Like it or not, every one of us benefits from Illegal Immigration.

If you have a problem with it, you pretty much have to buy all your produce from local farmer's markets.  A good majority of the fruit and vegetables that wind up in supermarkets was probably picked by a migrant farm worker living under the radar of the law.

And even then, there's no guarantee that your produce was picked by a legal resident.

Is it a good situation?  No, I'd prefer produce picked by legal US workers, making at least minimum wage.  But that would raise the price of nearly everything in your refrigerator.  With gas prices (especially diesel) already increasing the price of everything under the sun, somethings gotta give.

California feeds the rest of the country.  Our oranges are better to eat than Florida's (most of Florida's orange crop goes to juicers, most California oranges are table oranges because of their superior texture and flavor).  California produces over 90% of the world's almonds.  Come down on illegal immigration here, and you risk raising the price of nearly everything you eat.

Just some food for thought.  A 13-year-old doesn't have all the information they need to make an informed decision on such a complex issue, and while I commend her bravery, she should have expected some retaliation for publicly displaying her position.  That's the double-edged sword of free speech.  There's always someone who doesn't want to hear what you have to say, and may go to extremes to shut you up.

If the home countries did more to keep their people happy, then their people would have no reason to immigrate.  You can deal with the symptoms all you want, but until you fix the cause, the problem will always exist.

How is standing up for the law a racial issue? Maybe if the sign read "I don't want hispanic's in my country" I guess I see things differently and not try to assume everything negative that happens between to races is because of racism. I hope I never ban some one of a minority race on our servers for breaking the rules they might accuse me it was because I am racist.

it is a racial issue.  The girls assignment was a political activism sign to bring to school.  Three hispanic students tore the sign away from her and started beating on her.  The problem I have for one is those kids are too young to be getting all wrapped in those debates.  Yes absolutely they should be learning about it, but I think this takes it a bit too far.  Nobody says anything when students want to walk out of school to protest for immigration rights, but when a white student protests the opposite, its wrong.  So its OK to be for it, but its not OK to be against it?  To me this is another stagnant issue where there is no good way out of it.  The illegal immigrants who are here who are willing to work the jobs that certain americans arent provide the US with the argricultural and economical needs, etc.  IF they are all arrested and deported those jobs go unfilled and leaves us with demand not being met.  I am supportive of the idea for everyone to be naturalized and become citizens should they decide to do so, but a good portion of them arent doing it.

I remembered when I was in the 8th grade back 6 years ago we had a debate club thing were we engaged heavy political and economical problems in the world. At 8th grade is the point where teen's minds are more active in politics and economics.

While I'm not going to go into a full-length page rant about this issue, I just have one question; "What Happened to the first amendment? Free to protest? Freedom of Speech?" I can understand if the sign said something really offensive such as "Fuck off Latinos" or "Go back over the border", I would be offended and angered by it as well but if it was just something more of "Stop Illegal Immigration" then that's just one's opinion. Like gurney said, this society sucks. I should run away with Fluffy and Gurney...

Also, Don't forget, 13-18 years old is the age where kids think it's the time of their lives. They all try to be "hard" and start fights over a small thing such as "Your Mother". Hell, back when I was at that age, if that comment was used, it was just taken lightly, not really offensive because of the sarcasm that was understood back then. Now, everything has changed.

Making political posters is a stupid assignment unless there was an actual debate to go along with them. It's one thing to make the kids pick a position and have them propose a researched debate, but to just have them come in and show off a poster is pointless.

Our immigration laws are stupid, there are thousands of visas that go unfilled every year because each country gets the same amount no matter what their population size or proximity. We have a definite problem, but I don't think it can be fixed. Too much of our industry has become dependent on cheap flexible labor to change it. Like Kagenin said, we'd have to accept a massive shift of lifestyle, and I don't see that happening.

Apparently, she lied about being attacked: http://www.kltv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8142322

"Charges are being filed against 13 year old Melanie Bowers by Athens ISD through the Henderson County District Attorney's office for filing a false report, said AISD officials today.

After Melanie's accusations, administrators reviewed school survellience videotape of the incident - which, instead of showing students beating or attacking her, showed Bowers scratching herself on her arms, face, and neck, and walking through the halls of the school calmly long after she claimed the incident happened."

Non-story at this point

haha I was just posting that! It seems like there's an awful lot of these type of stories that blow up and enrage everyone but turn out later to have been faked by one of the parties involved.
