"The Cell Tax Fairness Act will help ensure that consumers make choices about communications technology based on the merits of that technology, rather than on the rate of taxation," Lofgren said in a statement.
Who actually does this? Not that I'm against this bill, I think it's great, I just think it's something that looks good rather than something that will actually do anything. I don't know anyone that chooses a wireless plan and provider based on how much taxes they're going to have to pay. That would be like choosing your hotel room based on how much the tax is going to be (something that I'm also betting very few people do).
So assuming this actually passes (the wireless companies will fight it tooth and nail), then there won't be any new federal taxes for 5 years. Then, once it's up, the tax rates will jump since they haven't moved in 5 years. Yeah, great idea.
Maybe instead of this they should be passing bills to give tax incentives where it counts, like food and energy bills. Tax incentives for people that choose to drive hybrids and things like that. I know California already gives HOV lane ok stickers to you if you have a hybrid, why not give additional tax breaks?
