What's the best way to punish the same early adopter customers that helped make your service a success in the first place? If you're Netflix, it's charging them extra for renting Blu-ray. CEO Reed Hastings justifies this action by saying "consumers are used to paying more for high-definition," basically punching this next generation of early adopters in the nads for doing what they love to do.

We're not sure how many Blu-ray rentals you need to have before you qualify for the higher-priced membership (or if you need to pay up before you even rent one), but this is undoubtedly a limited time deal. We can't imagine Netflix will keep charging people more once 25-50% of their customer base starts renting Blu-ray movies.

Will Blockbuster follow? We hope not. For their sake as much as ours

What the hell is Netflix?  Huh?

If this is a serious question, then I'll explain.  Its a DVD rental-by-mail service.  After signing up for their service, you go onto their website and list all the movies you'd like to rent.  They send out the movie at the top of your list, and when you're done, you send it back to them.  When the receive that, they send out the next movie in your queue, and so on.  You can sign up for a 2-movie plan, which costs a little more.

Instead of late fees, you have your monthly subscription fee.  You're free to keep your movies as long as you want, but there's more than a few people who choose to rip and copy the movies as soon as they get them (which there's no real way for them to dissuade you from doing).

Gamefly works the same way, but for video games (and its a little more expensive, but still a great service.)

Their service has Blockbuster shitting their pants.  They've tried to offer a similar service, but its been nothing but trouble for them.

I have a small idea of what it was but you went more in-depht with it. I sorta thought it was like BlockBluster but through the mail..

Thanks for the explanation though, but it was kinda a sarcastic remark since I know no one that uses services like that. Hell, who goes to blockbuster anymore, when you get all your movies bootleg or from friends?!?!
