State police said Thursday that one person died in a crash in Ledyard.

A Ledyard police officer tried to stop the vehicle for a motor vehicle violation, police said. The officer said that as he was walking toward the car, the driver sped away, and the car crashed into a pole.

They said the person was thrown from the vehicle after it rolled over on Iron Street, also known as Route 214, after striking the pole at about 6:30 p.m.

The identity of the person was not known, as police said they are still investigating the crash.

Route 214 in Ledyard was closed due to the crash between Highview Terrace and Spicer Hill. Police said they do not know when the roadway would be reopened.
