This article was written 1 1/2 years ago. Pretty old news, IBM is already readying up their next supercomputer: Sequoia; which features 16 cores per chip; 4096 processors per rack. Now that's real news.

IDK bout the PS3, but IIRC, the Xbox 360 which has a 3 core IBM chip was release before any mainstream single chip Quad core processors.

Right. The PS3 uses IBM chip technology as well (Cell Microprocessors)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Hardware
And I guess they're referred to as "synergistic processing elements" (SPEs). The PS3 has 8, but uses one as a spare and one dedicated to the OS. So it really only has 6 availiable for developers to utilze.

It's not BJ's fault as he is new to the hardware scene but he will one day buy a super computer, use it for a time machine, travel back in time and kill off those who mocked him on this thread
love you BJ

Anyone else worry that computers will become so powerful they will develop sentience? Sentient machines are never a good thing: see the Matrix if you have any doubts about that one...I dont want to be holding conversations with my gaming rig, or having it tell me how much pr0n is on my HD's
But a supercomputer becoming a time machine that is plausibly...really. It works so fast it breaks the space time continuum...bad thoughts

not really because, a computer can only do what its programmed to do.
