i dont know how you think that australia is becoming a police state. we don't have laws allowing warentless wiretaps, and other shit like the patriot act.
The only thing like that i could say is that the nsw state gov are corrupt bastids. But they are getting weeded out. Not beingable to have firearms and sutff it's so we cant defend agaisnt a facist uprise in the government. It's for public safety. So many more people die in the usa from guns, that in australia even if you scale it so the population is balanced.

Heres a list devised by Dr Alison Broinowski that gives points to a country thats heading into a facist sesspool

    * nationalism and its symbols: emphasis on the observance of flags, songs, and anthems

1.Powerful and Continuing Nationalism

Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

    * disdain for human rights: approval or condoning of torture, capital punishment, and incarceration in the name of ‘security’.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights

Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

    * enmity: identification of outsiders, communists, terrorists, minorities, and elites as opponents of patriotism

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

    * militarism: disproportionate government funding for military purposes to the neglect of social needs, and glamorisation of military service

4. Supremacy of the Military

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorised.

    * male dominance: rigidifying of gender roles, raising opposition to abortion, support for ‘family values’ and anti-gay legislation

5. Rampant Sexism

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

    * media compliance: indirect control of the media by government regulation, concessions to sympathetic media organisations and individuals, and censorship, whether direct, indirect, or voluntary

6. Controlled Mass Media

Sometimes the media are directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media are indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

    * national security as national interest: use of fear and ‘the national interest’ to induce consent

7. Obsession with National Security

Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

    * religion and government: mainstream theology used to manipulate public opinion, while government actions ignore its tenets

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined

Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

    * power elites: politicians owe their tenure to corporate supporters, and return favours to business

9. Corporate Power is Protected

The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

    * suppression of labour: unions are eliminated or disempowered in the name of reform and fairness

10. Labor Power is Suppressed

Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

    * hostility to intellectuals and artists: free expression is attacked and government funding is threatened or removed from those it doesn’t approve of

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts

Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

    * civil liberties and judicial independence forgone: restraints are overridden, and police abuses are overlooked

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment

Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

    * cronyism without accountability: those who protect politicians from scrutiny are rewarded with favours, promotions, and possessions

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

    * fraudulent elections: electoral rules are manipulated and media reports distorted, and cooperative judges legitimize the outcomes.

14. Fraudulent Elections

Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

alot of those id say are more active in the USA then AUS.

times have changed, there is no need to own a gun. there are other less volatile alternatives. its not the 1700's and your not getting British soldiers walking up to your porch killing you, unless you swear to king and crown.

There are good reasons to outlaw guns, imo the 2nd amendment is stupid.

Times have changed>?....Australia and Britain are on the fast track to becoming police states.(with the US and Canada not far behind)  And when you guys have finally had enough you won't have fuck all to defend yourselves with against the Gov.  HISTORY does not lie.  In recent memory just ask a holocaust survivor, or someone who made it out of China, or Rawanda, or some other shit hole with a fucked up gov. that they had no means by which to stand up to them.  Digg deeper and the same thing repeats itself.  You cannot trust a Gov. with total power....lest they will abuse it.  There will always be a need for a man to be able to defend himself when he has had enough.....To think otherwise is naive.

Agreed. If you give the government too much power, they'll abuse it. When they do, citizens should have the right to set forth a militia and fight back with guns.

we do have that right decom. the problem is there are to many pussies who dont know what the hell is going on or understand it to begin with. the goverment already has to much power it was never meant to be involved in most of the places it is now but we keep electing the same people into power who only want one thing and thats more power. at some point its going to break down and our last resort may be to fight back.

The problem with that, is that there are alot of retards who are too lazy to care, and let the country fall under totalitarian control. To get an uprising wouldn't be easy.

I have no faith that a revolution in America would improve anything, more likely it would just end up as massive ethnic/ideological cleansing like the French Terror. When the shit goes down, I'll be more worried about other people trying to kill me and steal my shit than anything the government does.

Yeah that's the same conclusion me and a few buddies have ended up comming to.  IMO This country needs a shift in values, policy, and practice brought forth from within the system for it to actually take hold and work.....w/out destroying what we already have.

I don't know though I have even less faith in our system then I do in our people.  Undecided

its funny when you think about it. Id say in about 50 years china will be the international powerhouse that america has been over the last 100years. Economically they are booming, and they have lots of resources stored away.
