this is CNN

=========================================================================

(CNN) -- Pirates hijacked a British-owned bulk carrier Saturday in the Indian Ocean, but NATO forces stopped an attack on another vessel in the Gulf of Aden hours earlier, NATO maritime authorities said.
11 pirates are arrested by Yemeni security forces in an operation last month.

11 pirates are arrested by Yemeni security forces in an operation last month.

The UK cargo ship, the MV Ariana, was carrying 35,000 tons of soya about 250 nautical miles (287 miles) northwest of the Seychelles when it was seized around dawn.

The crew members are Ukrainians and they are not believed to harmed, NATO said. It is unclear how many crew members were aboard the vessel and how it came to be attacked. NATO said it was unaware of ransom demands or any threats against those aboard.

NATO said a European Union Protection Aircraft has been deployed to monitor and track the MV Ariana, which is making its way toward Somalia -- the epicenter of the pirate industry.

The Seychelles is a republic consisting of a group of islands off East Africa.

On Friday evening, a NATO operation conducted by a Portuguese warship disrupted a pirate attack on a Bahamas oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden.

The tanker, the MV Kition, broadcast an emergency alert when a pirate-filled skiff approached. NRP Corte-Real, the closest NATO ship, and its helicopter responded and intercepted the pirates.

Also because Somalia's oceans and shores have been destroyed by illegal offshore waste dumping. If the shipping companies weren't so fucking cheapass and provided their ships with security forces it wouldn't be a problem. Instead we have to send the Navy out there to chase some dudes with rusty AKs in canoes around the ocean.  idiot2

That and the Somalian government is basically useless. They have basically no power. They're pleading for outside nations to send forces to control the nation. The real power lies in local warlords and clans. The constant change of government leads to the country's instability.

It's a tricky problem, born out of inequity, poverty, and the fact that the super powers of the world are busy else ware atm.

I know that a lot of the problem stems from a few things.  1.  Jurisdiction (no one knows who has it, and it is fought over or used as an excuse), 2.  Resources (some places just don't have enough of them to tackle the problem) 3. Some(a think quite a few) vessels cannot carry any type of firearm or spark hazard, 4.  People aboard vessels must, according to international law, follow the laws of the county's territorial waters that they are in.....which a lot of the time means no weapons aboard a ship else it constitutes importing firearms.

I could be wrong on all this shit as it is just my $.02 but that whats it seems to break down to.

I have a feeling that soon these laws may be revised as these pirates are growing more bold in their attacks. IMO the easiest way to deter these attacks would be having a security crew on board specifically for the purpose of repelling boarders. This is probably the next best option to having navy warships escort any and all shipping through the "danger zone". There is a reason these ships are attacked and the lack of defenses is the most likely reason. They really dont have all that high tech of weapons so it would not have to be a large force, just those who know how to use their weapons in an effective manner (saying a lot i know).

I think the logic in the lesson of Kennesaw Georgia should apply to this pirate crisis. And that logic is pretty much what y'all have been stating: have guns on board!
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1818862/posts

Quote
The New American magazine reminds us that March 25th marked the 16th anniversary of Kennesaw, Georgia's ordinance requiring heads of households (with certain exceptions) to keep at least one firearm in their homes.

The city's population grew from around 5,000 in 1980 to 13,000 by 1996 (latest available estimate). Yet there have been only three murders: two with knives (1984 and 1987) and one with a firearm (1997). After the law went into effect in 1982, crime against persons plummeted 74 percent compared to 1981, and fell another 45 percent in 1983 compared to 1982.

I think you're right there, I'd guess any petroleum tanker with weapons on board would be impossible or at least oppressively expensive to insure. Besides, they know taxpayers will subsidize their protection with the Navy instead.  Roll Eyes
