I cant imagine how the family of this kat is dealing with this.  evidently his legs were amputated due to a mistake by the surgeon working on the guy.  now due to some stupid ass thing called the feres act, the airman cannot collect damages from the surgeon due to his complacency.  I feel terrible for this guy and his wife, because hes only 20 for one, and 2 this started out as a routine gallbladder removal, the same thing I had done in January.

That airbase is in the next town over from me, i used to live 2 miles from it.

I worked with some amazingly competent MD's while I was in the service, so they aren't all bad.  I had a surgery done by the Navy, 1 done by the Airforce, and 1 done by the Army.  Each of them went without complications.

The shitty thing about being int he military when this happens, is he can't sue.  That being said, I am pretty sure that his family can sue on his behalf, though I could be wrong.

I hear he's stumped about what to do now...

I have to tell you that having worked in medicine for so long, i have a twisted and warped sense of humor.  Your post truly made me laugh out loud, a good solid belly laugh that left me with tears in my eyes.  Cry Thumbs Up rockon  A beer for you sir  cheers

I dunno if i'm in just a really good mood or i'm still laughing about targetdogs fucking youtube things but I definitely lol'd to this, the things you come up with radio sheesh  2funny

It is shitty that this had to happen, but honestly I don't think it's just all about the military doctor's this could have happened in a good ole public hospital as well, shitty that he was so young, but his life isn't over it's now just beginning with a few altercations.

as a service member i dont have any doubt towards our medical branches. US military doctors are some of the best in the world with much experience. saying that, mistakes do happen, we are only human. i just hope this kid doesnt get screwed by the bureaucracy of the military. the feres doctrine saves the military from itself in paperwork sense. there are alot of people in the military that take advantage of the 'unlimited' spending power the military has. if anything i hope there is a change in medical compinsation that the military provides.

i believe the future isnt bleak for this guy at all, not only with he be getting a solid paycheck for the rest of his life but he will receive the best medical support the military has to offer. i know the government wont dump this kid, at this point they cant. basically he traded his legs for retirement at 20 years old, now this being considered a good trade is up for debate but i will say the military does take care of its own.

I dont really agree. It is ok for being free but the healthcare i had before the Navy was way better. Also Doc, I think you are right about his family being able to sue. The way things are now  he would only get half of his paycheck for the rest of his life. If i had to choose between $800 a month (what he is currently looking at) and my legs i would stick with my legs. You cant even pay rent in Cali with that.

if you guys would read the article I posted it says service members nor their families can collect damages of any kind.  If I were his dad or brother or whomever, Id be looking for loopholes anyway I could.  I dont really agree with the majority of you as far as military healthcare.  I had my wisdom teeth pulled and never got called back for the gauze to be taken out, had oral surgery and bled for a week because the stitching job came apart, my wife gave birth to our 4 year old at the naval hospital on camp pendleton in an overflow room barely big enough to fit one bed and we had to stay for 3 days.  I got an anthrax vaccine when I wasnt supposed to because the docs thought everybody was supposed to get it and I got quarantined for 2 weeks.  The other side of that is Ive met some great docs who truly were life savers.  Not only that but a few posts down-played the fact that this 20 year old kid had both of his legs cut off and no doubt will get 100% for the rest of his life, which comes out to I think around 1700.00 a month for him, which isnt shit really.  Its a really unfortunate situation.  Id kill somebody.

I actually did read the link and saw that his family can't sue.  I think that's bullshit, and my guess is that there is a loophole somewhere that he can take advantage of.

He will get 100% disability which isn't great, but it has its advantages.  He can go to school for free for life, he is eligible for all kinds of financial backing too.

I echo your last statement, I too would kill a motherfucker.  That doctor would not be safe anywhere.

(your name here), what you just said is one of the most insanely, idiotic things I have ever heard. No where in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
