if your in socal try taking the catalina express. i think its 70 bucks for round trip. its a nice place with pleanty of sight seeing, crystal clear beach water you can take glass bottom boats or tour the island. lots of cool native american stuff.... i think its the only place where you can see wild buffalos and the marine life is awsome whales, dolfins, seals, sealions exotic fish...
its an island paradise. and only 1\2 hour away from long beach.

I've been to Catalina island a few years ago on a cruise to Mexico. Catalina Island itself was nice, the Mexico part was not...

Since this isn't that old and I live in Las Vegas I figured I would chime in.
Honestly if you're looking for rustic/camping/outdoors type stuff, we don't have a whole lot during the summer unless you really want to chill out in 100-115 degree desert heat. LOL.
We have Mt. Charleston, but that is best seen during Winter (for the snow and ski lodge) and Spring, for the ambiance.
We have Red Rock Canyon, which you can go through a 9 mile drive/bike/run/walk and they have stops where you can go rock climbing and a lot of 'desert' scenery.
We have Lake Mead, but that is honestly nothing special. I live here and never go there. I take a 2-3 hour road trip to Utah to go to the lake, or a short trip over the Hoover Dam to Willow Beach, AZ.
Then we have the Hoover Dam, a 1-2 hour guided tour through the dam.
That's all I can think of currently. :X If you do decide to come to Vegas, let me know, we can have a few beers on me!

Don't know if I'm too late here, but I would recommend Santa Barbara Mission, Courthouse, and Presido. SB Mission is still an active church, and there's a lot of cool history to learn about there. The Courthouse is really nice, I've never taken a tour but I've been there for... other things... And the Presido is the old Spanish fort. Also a lot of cool history around here in general. At the airport they just unveiled a WWII memorial to commemorate the Marine Airbase there, and the Goleta Pier was the only place in the contiguous US to be attacked by Japan during the war. Not to mention of course that Santa Barbara is beautiful and the weather is great. Its the American Riviera some say
There's also botanical gardens (I think they are open, might have been damaged in the last fire), and a zoo.

Wheres some good scenic places to go to in NorCal / SoCal. I'm looking to go on a roadtrip with the family in Mid August. The roadtrip is mostly going to be phototaking of scenic locations.
I've already been to a bunch of places in SoCal, but maybe you know a spot that I don't.
Some places I've already been:
SoCal: Hearst Castle, Pebble Beach, Camel-By-The-Sea, Monterey
NorCal: Eureka, Sacramento (Kinda, not really), Yellowstone National Park
So far, we're planning on a NorCal road trip to Redding, CA to see the Sundial Bridge, Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake, Shasta Caverns, and the McArthur-Burney Falls.
Any other suggestions, Cali folks? We're willing to go as far as NorCal or SoCal/Las Vegas,NV.
Ever hear of Napa? Sonoma? Marin? Mendocino? Tahoe? Tahoe? Especially Emerald Bay?
FYI -- There's nobody who lives in this state that would place Monterey or Carmel in SoCal. Central Coast maybe, but more likely NoCal. SLO, in the southern most part of the Central Coast, you might find an agreed to dividing line . . .
We're in the Napa Valley right now, and it is beautiful. They're just starting to harvest the grapes . . .

We're heading up to Redding tomorrow in the late afternoon. On Sunday, we'll start on Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake, McArthur-Burney Falls.
I'll be back Monday.
Photos will be provided upon return.

If you're in Northern Ca I would definitely check out San Francisco. I always have a great time at Alcatraz and the Barracks on the north side of the Golden Gate bridge are great photo ops. Oh yeah Golden Gate park has a thing or two to see. One of the greatest cities IMO. You also have Stinson beach, Dillons beach, and Bodega bay nearby. The Napa valley/Healdsberg/ Calastog area, is scenic and very close to SF. Further north you can check out Mendocino/Fort Bragg area, Redwood national forest, the Big Tree's, Shelter Cove, and Eureka. Lake Tahoe is also pretty nice. I would check out the south shore. On the way to LT you can side track to Placerville / Coloma area, where the of the gold rush started. Placerville also has a lil' wine country thang going on. Funky ass Nevada has a lot interesting places too, but I guess that's another post.
