a music teacher brought in a school cello wondering if its worth fixing.  the things all bashed up cause some kid fell on it and put a nice hole in the top.

Since its a school instrument they try to evaluate whether its worth it to fix or be thrown away.  I told her it will take time but can be fixed, at least 3 hours of work.

i noticed that is was made in germany while i was inspecting it and recognised the name.  well after she left i looked it up and found out its worth $6000.  i want this cello!   i haven't told her the worth yet, either way the school cant afford to fix it.

Now I know if i tell her how much the cello is worth they will want the cello.  but if i cant offer to fix other instruments for trade maybe?

is that wrong or should i tell them how much the cello is worth?  it happens all the time i can only imagine how many expensive instruments they have thrown away.  they can't afford to fix it but maybe i can offer the trade and still get the cello. what should i do?

yeh I don't want to be dishonest its not usually something i do.  but i can realize that that cello is gonna go to some snot nosed kid that has no idea what they're playing on.  this cello should never really be in the hands of kids.  What happens is someone donated it probably back 10 years or so and no one really knows what they have....its a shame.  i know the teacher will keep it for themselves or give it to a child thats gifted which is cool.....but they may just sell it for money who knows.  i wan it for myself just to have not to sell i just appreciate fine instruments.

and yes Gurney i am a luthier  Roll Eyes  i specialize in violin and cellos but i do guitar work as well.

i would try and keep it, and offer a replacement. or say something like you accidently damaged it during restoration and here is a replacement due to the damage.

As a music student i know how much school instruments get bashed around.

im suprised that the music teacher has no idea what the cello is worth, id say swap it out if you can. if you can fix it up real nice i would hold on to it, a $6000 cello now could be worth alot of money 15 years from now  Thumbs Up
