Through a village it is fast, but in general...that's not very fast. thats the average high way speed from california to arizona...then again that is all desert, no kids to come running out into the street.

agreed, but 35+ over any limit usually gets you in deep shite here. like magnitudes worse than a couple hundred dollar 80-in-a-65 ticket. Although, u have to realize that the societal laws in the EU are waaay diff than the US--guns/violence not widely accepted there, but Sex and drugs are more accepted. so maybe its tied to that?

Yeah, 35 over the limit gets you into reckless driving territory here, it'd probably end up $1K or more in fines, especially if it's on surface streets. I got popped going 15 over on the freeway and it was a $250 ticket. If you factored that to my income level at the time it would probably be a far higher penalty to income ratio than this dude's $290K fine.
I'm torn on that one, it kinda makes sense though. If I had a few million dollars I wouldn't give a shit how fast I was going if it just meant a $300 ticket every time I got caught. At $290K I might actually consider slowing down. The northern European countries are pretty hardcore about their traffic laws and systems, especially in city centers. The fucked up part is that he could have just taken it on the bahn and gone as fast as traffic allowed him to.

it reminds me of a time when my buddy borrowed his dad's porche to drive me home one night. He got me from the center of phoenix to North Scottsdale in 15 minutes...at the time that was a 30 minute trip. He was pushing 120mph on the empty free way for a good 2 minutes before he had to slow down to catch the exit...I was more scared of getting pulled over in that moment than I have ever been in my life. He was 19 years old in his dad's porche doubling the speed limit on the freeway. They would have arrested us in a second.

It's a lot easier to drive without a license than pay off a $290K fine, or he could just hire a driver. Taking away people's licenses as a punishment is a joke. |
