There was a giant earthquake in Chile this morning and it looks like Hawaii is going to get hit with a tsunami from it:

The Richter scale is an exponential scale.  Scary, eh?

The first thing I thought of when this hit was how recent it was to the 7.0 that hit off the coast of the Ryukyu islands of Japan.  Just the opposite side of the Pacific tectonic plate, really...

That's life on the pacific ring of fire.  Still, this really sucks for the people affected.

the richter scale is used solely for local kinda shiet. i took a geology course last semester, and its just become a common term that people use. the scale is rele the moment magnitude scale..and each level of earth quake is 10 times the amplitude and 30 times the energy i.e a 7.0M will have 30 times the energy as a 6.0M and 1000x the energy of a 5.0M..i think the energy i scloser to 31.6x from each full level so it is scary shit :/
