I'm not sure taking out dedicated servers was Activision's call. I remember from the chat with an IW dev saying that it was the bst way to go and MW2 was finally the way they wanted to go with the series.

unfortunately, I believe this will end well.
Activision has plenty of IPs that are going down the drain. (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero) They will fight tooth and nail to keep the Call of Duty series to themselves and this will put strain on IW's coffers... maybe.
Infinity Ward were a group of people that split from EA. They won't go with them anytime soon.
Who has the money to actually support them? THQ?
The best that gamers can hope for is.. if Infinity Ward and Valve team up together to support each other. These are studios that happen to take a generous amount of time to give their product the best effort to quality as possible.
The second possibility is to appeal to become a first-party console maker like Naughty Dog and get money directly from console makers. Hmm...
