Need to upgrade a Pentium4-class/DDR2 rig with some "future-proof-ability". All I really need is a new Mobo, CPU and RAM. Not necessarily a gaming rig(could have potential)--but will be used on a daily basis and multi-process tasks will be common.
My thinking is to get an LGA 1156 socket board and put the cheapest i-series CPU and DDR3 ram into it. That way, I can put an i7-core into it in about 12-18months when the price comes down. Same notion for the RAM; i can put Win7 on this rig and upgrade from 4GB to 8GB when(if??) DDR3 prices come down.
There's quite a selection out there, so at least there's a ton of options. Looking to keep these 3 components in a $350 range. I was thinking of using this opportunity to branch away from ASUS/Gigabyte boards--maybe an EVGA? But can't seem to find any under $140.
Right off, my concerns are:
--DDR3 RAM brands (and values--damn, why is RAM so pricey still

)
--P55 vs H55 Intel Chipsets

--USB 3.0
Historically, I've used GSkill or Corsair RAM, but then I've never had any true RAM failures or lack of performance.
So far, these seem the most promising
