sense everyone viewing this has a internet connection, im sure youve heard about the tsunami in japan. one of their nuclear reactors is acting up, hopefully theres not a meltdown but this is pretty close to a being chernobyl-esk type situation.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/03/radiation-1000-times-normal-detected-around-crippled-japanese-plant/1

Quote
Update at 6:25 p.m. ET: Japan's nuclear safety agency is preparing to issue what Kyodo News called "an unprecedented order" directing the Tokyo Electric Power Co. to open a valve at the earthquake-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant to release pressure from a reactor that is in danger of overheating.

Original post: Radiation 1,000 times normal has been detected inside a crippled nuclear plant in northeastern Japan where utility managers have released potentially radioactive steam to reduce mounting reactor pressure, the Kyodo News service is reporting, citing the government's safety agency.

That suggests radioactivity could spread around Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima No. 1 plant, where thousands of residents within a 6-miles were ordered to leave before dawn Saturday.

A state of emergency has been declared at the plant, one of the world's largest. Its primary cooling system was damaged by Friday's magnitude 8.9 earthquake.

There's potential danger to the public from three of at least 11 nuclear power reactors that are shut down, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Managers at Fukushima No. 1 said before the planned release of steam that any radiation would be "very low and the safety of nearby residents has been ensured," Kyodo reported earlier. Within the hour, plant officials said some radiation may have already been released, according to Kyodo.

About 3,000 people within a 2-mile radius had been ordered to leave late Friday, while thousands more within a 6-mile radius were told to stay indoors. Before dawn, however, mandatory evacuations were extended to 6 miles.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan plans to visit the plant later Saturday.

A U.S. nuclear specialist calls it "a dicey situation."

"They're operating on battery power now, and if they lose the batteries, they lose core cooling," Edwin Lyman, with the Union of Concerned Scientists, told the Monitor. He said the military is supposed to be bringing batteries to keep the backup cooling system operating to prevent the reactor's uranium core from overheating and melting.

From what I read, there was an explosion, but it didn't damage the reactor there, just the building housing the reactor.  There are still fears of more explosions and a possible meltdown, however...

chernobyl type meltdown impossible. Fukushima Daiichi and daini plants are not the same style reactors. they are much more stable.

There are fears of partial meltdowns of reactor 1 and 3. both of them were powered up at the time of the quake and when the power went down there was no way to bring coolant into the reactors to keep them from melting through the containments.

the explosion on saturday was caused by built up hydrogen which was created in the reactor. it escaped and blew up the building surrounding the containment of reactor 1. the containment was not damaged. the power agency released some of the building steam to relieve the pressure from the reactor 1 containment and injected seawater and boric acid? into the reactor to help cool the radioactive material down. Because the the reactor shut itself down at the time of the earthquake a full meltdown is extremely unlikely. What we are dealing with now is the remnant of radioactivity within the fuel itself. Of course radiation is a supreme danger, and something like 9 people have already been taken to the hospital because of radiation. the evacuation orders were given to people living within 12miles/20km of the two plans.

There are fears that reactor 3 was building up hydrogen on sunday. they vented it in an attempt to avoid the explosion that happened at reactor 1 building on saturday.

it is difficult to find accurate information about this. But the only thing we can do is wait and see and get the hell out of that area. the wind will take what little (we all hope it is a little amount) radiation that does escape from these two reactors and blow it out to sea where it will do little damage to people.

This website along with the daily yomiuri and the NHK site have detailed info in English.

apparently, Monday, 11:08am Japan time, Reactor #3 building blew up due to hydrogen and oxygen. similar deal as the explosion from the #1 reactor building that blew up on Saturday afternoon (japan time).

People are blowing this way out of proportion although it is a danger its nothing like chenobyl the russians buillt an inferior plant without the proper sheilding then put morons in charge. sure some radiastion will leak and the most likely amount to reach any human is 10 times the level you get from a daily walk in the sun. sounds like alot but a full set of chest xrays is about 15 times a daily dose and ive had at least 2 rounds of those. maybe thats why my balls always feel tingley.

(your name here), what you just said is one of the most insanely, idiotic things I have ever heard. No where in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
