Alright, so I've been using a first generation MS Natural PS/2 keyboard (before they got really stupid with the arrow key layout) for forever and a day (well, since my parents bought it with a gateway computer some 15 years ago).  It still works, and I can type comfortably with my longer-than-average fingers.

But the keys are old and loose, and the noise keeps my girlfriend up sometimes.  And I'm really wanting a back-lit keyboard to help me in the dark (preferably red, but blue is fine too).  Upgrading to USB would be nice too, since I can't hold down more than 3 or 4 keys at a time, thanks to the old ass ps/2 port and hardware.

So, any recommendations?

I think any plug in keyboard these days with the features you want would be ok. Only with a wireless keyboard would I really do some research to make sure it works well. The red back light will probably be what drives your decision.

this is the keyboard im rocking.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/07/microsoft-fantastic-reclusa-gaming-keyboard/

the backlight helps alot when gaming at night or im my case, writing papers for school (i do most of my school work at night). this keyboard lets you hold down more then 3 keys without it freezing on you and this is the first keyboard ive used where the custom buttons are worth a crap.

its taken the abuse of my drunken keyboard pounding when im getting owned at battlefield and is still trucking. so with a price range from $35-$50 depending on where you buy it, i think its a great investment.

if your set on the red backlight though, one suggestion. dont settle for a wireless keyboard unless you want one. i think wireless anything (mouse/keyboard) for computers are a horrible investment. batteries get expensive over time and unless you are disposing of them properly, overall bad for the environment. its the same equivlent of WoW or rift, 'hey buy this game for $50 then pay me $15 a month to keep playing it'. not only does USB not cost you anything more then when you buy it once, but i think that wired keyboards and mice are a little more sturdy.. IE less components to break.

hope this helps  Thumbs Up

I don't use wireless keyboards or mice.  I only use a wireless keyboard with my Wii.

That's a nice board, looks pretty cool.

Supposedly red is easier on the eyes over long periods of time (less UV, but I doubt that's much of an issue with these low-power LEDs).

Nice.  The goddamn windows keys on this old ms natural keyboard are fricking huge (twice the width of a normal key), and frequently get in my way.

Decisions decisions... I loved my old Razer mouse before it died.

You could probably mod a white backlit keyboard to red and I dont think it would be very hard to do.

I gotta tell you, I love my Microsoft Sidewinder X6 keyboard.  One of my favorite features is the keypad is hot-swappably detachable, which allows for a smaller footprint while gaming.  It is a wired keyboard, but I've gone back to wired keyboard and mouse for a variety of reasons . . .

That does look sick, Fog.

My decision has basically come down to the MSSWX6, The Logitech board that was mentioned, and a Saitek board.  But so far, the X6 seems be the most well reviewed.  About $50 is a good price point as well...
