Anyone know of a good brand to get a boat motor? I have a 14 foot flat bottom boat that I want to get a good motor. I have a 3.5 sea king for trolling but I am looking for a main motor. Any recommendations?

i would go either mercury or mercruiser, those motors are the easiest to find parts for.

I had a game fisher motor and i found out the hard way that people dont work on the motor if something was to happen. which did... it wouldnt shift into 2nd or any other gear, it just stayed in first and everyone was like its just a lawn mower with a drive shaft... needless to say it was a pain in the ass to fix.

I have been looking at johnson and merc. but mercs are expensive new and used. I dont know how good crysler is on thier motors?

Been through many brands over the years Sea King, Force is decent, Johnson, etc. I currently run a Mercury 25hp on my 15.5ft Sylvan and it's great as well as easy to get parts/fix. It really comes down to the amount of $ you have to spend. Expect to pay out the ass for a 4stroke vs 2. For that size boat I like 9.9 or 15hp depending on what your doing.

Check with those guys over in Tigard/Milwaukie -> Stevens Marine http://www.stevensmarine.com/used-boats.php Click on used motors.

Also these dudes: http://www.ymarinaboats.com/pre_owned_list.asp?sortsel=PL&category=27&mfg=0&ModelYearFrom=1900&ModelYearThru=2011&PriceFrom=0&PriceThru=999999999&ModelSearch=&lengthMin=&lengthMax=&feetmeters=feet&submit=Search

Craigslist is a gamble but most times the better deal. May be worth having the motor evaluated by a repair shop before purchasing.
